About IDMA

At the Institute for Digital Media Arts (IDMA), we provide high quality, "live" online professional training in the digital media arts. Our programs are designed for both current practitioners wanting to take their skills to the next level and those just starting out, looking to turn a passion into a career.

There is no substitute for collaborative teaching and learning; no amount of recorded lectures, videos and screen-casts alone can compete with the value of working and studying with real people. To personalize learning at IDMA, we use state-of-the-art social learning networks and live conferencing – tools already familiar to anyone surfing the Web today.

To most people, social networking means a personal online group sharing life stories; educational and learning relationships may not come to mind. At IDMA social learning networks are carefully structured by some of the world's leading digital media practitioners and experts in learning-centered design. With their help we've created online intentional learning communities, places where relationships are sought and forged – just like those in a physical school.

Along with our social learning networks, we believe in the value of instructor-led courses. Having a real expert answer your questions and provide guidance on the spot makes a world of difference. How does that work online? IDMA makes innovative use of collaborative 'live' presentations. We've brought the essential practical nature of online learning together with the power of real people.

At IDMA, everybody is both a learner and a teacher; everybody can learn from somebody else and teach others what they know. The entire membership makes up 'the greater learning network,' an academic community where knowledge is both created and shared – and brought right to your home or workplace.

There are four intentional learning communities in the IDMA learning network. Their structures range from the informal sharing of knowledge to formal study of college-level professional training diplomas. The communities are:

COMMONS: A free community for everyone. Commons provides a space for everybody and anybody to meet with colleagues and learn from each other – a kind of situational mentoring where members can both ask for and give help to each other on the spot.

MENTORSHIPS: Mentorships provide an unprecedented opportunity for professional and artistic growth. Members can study online with some of the world’s finest and most successful working digital artists from around the world.

WORKSHOPS: Workshops provide short-form and professional development online courses that address specific topics and expertise.

THE INSTITUTE: The Institute provides online long-form professional training diploma programs designed to prepare students for a career in their chosen digital arts field.
