The skills involved in good street photography apply to most kinds of photography outside of the studio. Learning how to work rapidly and unobtrusively in busy environments with minimal equipment and maximum adaptability will serve any photographer well. Every photographer working on location wants to improve his/her ability to quickly analyze the quality/direction of light and frame/compose an image as they anticipate the unfolding activity.

Lecture and demonstrations explore:

  • What you need to be aware of when looking through the lens
  • How to anticipate the action
  • Seeing/metering the light
  • Specific issues of time of day/morning vs. evening light
  • Quality and direction of light
  • Basics of twilight/night photography
  • Your choice of lenses/focal length
  • Awareness of what’s in an environment as all the elements come together the moment an image is made
  • Basics of flash photography
  • The importance of the photographer's position
  • Framing to create dramatic images

Before photography even begins, the instructor and class will submit and review the students' existing portfolio (if available). Live group meetings will feature lectures, presentations of the work of other photographers and group critique of each student's best work. Throughout the class, the instructor will show his work and share specific techniques – and particular images to highlight those techniques – used to create effective street photography.

Requirements: Students must be able to operate their camera on manual exposure. They are expected to perform a minimum of 2 hours of homework per week, attend all classes, take advantage of instructor office hours and participate in the community.
